Birds falling out of the sky

THE DISCOVERY of about 100 dead birds near Eurong Village on Fraser Island yesterday has prompted a Department of Environment and Resource Management investigation.

Tests were already being carried out on short-tailed shearwater, or mutton birds, that had been found dead on Sunshine Coast and Moreton Bay beaches.

The Sunshine Coast and Moreton Bay birds were on their annual non-stop migration from northern Russia to rookeries in Victoria and South Australia.

They are believed to have suffered from exhaustion as a result of bad weather on the way and it is believed the birds on Fraser Island met with the same fate.

A similar event occurred five years ago when short-tailed shearwater birds were found dead around Fraser.

Tests at that time confirmed that they died from emaciation and starvation as a consequence of the migration.

A DERM spokesperson advised people in the area to avoid touching dead wildlife.
