Blue Heelers' Ditch Davey joins 800 Words cast

THE last time Ditch Davey was filming in New Zealand, he was wielding a sword on the set of the action-packed gladiator show Spartacus.

This time his character's weapon is a bit more subtle.

"Terry is a chef, so I had my fighting sticks but they're a little smaller on this show,” Davey said of his character on Channel 7's family drama 800 Words.

Terry is George Turner's (Erik Thomson) younger brother and he's set to stick around for the rest of the season after his arrival next week.

"He's a shoot first, ask questions later kind of guy,” Davey said.

"He shoots from the hip and he's just a very hyper-emotional kind of guy. He's got his charm but he's got a few demons as well.”

Davey said Terry's arrival in the coastal town of Weld would throw George.

"I think George can smell Terry a mile away. He's got a very definite fingerprint,” he said.

"He's in a small coastal town trying to make the most of his life and protect his kids and give them an upbringing and then a tornado rolls in from his old life.

"And it's a hard one to stomach because he knows what Terry is capable of and no one else does.

"He's trying to protect his friends and his family, so he's caught between a rock and a hard place.”

George (Erik Thomson), Shay (Melina Vidler) and Arlo Turner (Benson Jack Anthony) are joined in Weld by George's younger brother Terry (Ditch Davey) on 800 Words.

Davey said 800 Words was a show with a lot of heart which told a story of family and relationships most viewers could relate to.

"There's something very special about this show,” he said.

"I think you find within this show spectacular traits of the people in the town in a non-spectacular way.

"It's not car crashes, it's not a whole lot of buildings exploding. It's really dealing with people.”

And what sealed the deal for joining the project was the name Erik Thomson.

"When his name was mentioned, I thought, that's good enough for me,” Davey said. "He's a hard person not to get along with. He's a wonderful man, a wonderful actor.”

Davey is perhaps best known for his role as Constable Evan "Jonesy” Jones on the classic Aussie drama Blue Heelers.

"I get messages most weeks really, I was even stopped on the streets of New York from someone who had watched the show,” he said.

He said things had changed a lot since the days of Blue Heelers.

"Television's changed a lot over the years, particularly from where I started. It was a different landscape,” he said.

"We've got some great actors, great writers and directors and technicians.

"We've really got some wonderful people working in the industry and it has really raised the bar in what we see on TV.

"Drama is the way to go and we've got some wonderful, wonderful people in our country.”

"We need to keep putting out quality television and I think having the opportunity for New Zealand and Australia to co-produce like this really showcases what we can do together.”

800 Words airs on Tuesday at 9pm on Channel 7.
