THEY sound like a bunch of characters out of a children's picture book, but the reality is maybe even cuter.

On Christmas Day this year, Bon Bon the koala joey will celebrate his first birthday.

After arriving into the world on the most celebrated day on the calendar in 2014, Bon Bon will this year spend the public holiday playing with his best friends and fellow koala joeys Lamington and Tim Tam.

Of course, mum Kiah will also be on hand to make sure he doesn't get into too much mischief.

His favourite wildlife keeper, Mandji has a big batch of fresh gum leaves for him so we're confident he'll have a great time.

Bon Bon  lives at the Rainforestation Nature Park in Kuranda, outside of Cairns.
