Ash Boney adds class to Seagulls centres

FORMER Toowoomba Rugby League premiership-winner Ashley Boney will add serious starch to Hervey Bay's backline.

The 25-year-old slots into the centres for the Bay's seventh-round match against Wests Panthers.

It is an important fixture for the Seagulls, who are level with Past Brothers and Wests heading into the round.

Coach Tye Ingebrigtsen said Boney was a quality inclusion.

"Ash Boney is a good pick-up, came here two weeks ago from Gatton," he said.

"He played out at Toowoomba, and he's come to Hervey Bay. His missus moved here so we were fortunate to pick him up."

While it is only the seventh round, today's game is arguably the most important on the calendar.

The clash of the Bundaberg Rugby League heavyweights will act as a curtain-raiser for the Intrust Super Cup game between Sunshine Coast Falcons and Ipswich Jets.

It is one of the biggest rugby league games to have been brought to Hervey Bay, and club members have spent weeks preparing the ground.

Darcy Horgan and Brad Jung are out of the side named earlier this week with Adam Roderick and Junior Saumani to move into the A-grade side.

Joel McCrea will partner captain Clinton Horne in the halves, the latter saying Wests would be unpredictable.

"You don't know till you play them, they play a lot of what's in front of them," Horne said.

"They have a structure, then all of a sudden they'll do a little chip and chase and all of that sort of stuff.

"They can score from anywhere. We have to be on our game and the wingers and fullback have to be on theirs or we'll get our pants pulled down.

"Hopefully, we can control the ruck, our forwards can do the job and our backs can look pretty and score some points."

Kick-off is at 4pm.
