Tenders for youth boot camp trial now open

UPDATE: The State Government has called for applications from organisations to host youth boot camp trials in the Sunshine Coast, Rockhampton and Townsville regions.

Attorney-General Jarrod Bleijie said the programs would cover the Fraser Coast, Gympie and Sunshine Coast Regional Council areas; the Rockhampton Regional Council area including Rockhampton, Yeppoon and Mount Morgan; and the Townsville local government area of Palm Island, north to Ingham, south to Burdekin and west to Hughenden.

He said the two-year trial should be ready to accept participants later this year.

EARLIER: A call for expressions of interest will go out on Tuesday for the development of a youth boot camp trial in the Sunshine/Fraser Coast area.

Attorney-General Jarrod Bleijie will invite service providers to put forward their case to pilot the early intervention camp to help youth in the Sunshine, Fraser Coast and Gympie council areas.

A location will be selected as part of the tendering process.

Youths can be referred to the boot camp through schools, police or health and child safety services but participation is voluntary.

The two-year pilot boot camp will involve mentoring and physical training.

"The early intervention boot camp will target young people at high risk of long-term involvement in the criminal justice system," Mr Bleijie said.

"Through a highly structured program involving mentoring and physical training, they'll be taught discipline, respect and responsibility.

"We're serious about tackling the issue of juvenile crime, and by getting in early, we can steer at-risk young people back to a better life of education and employment opportunities.

"The program will cover the Fraser Coast Regional Council area, Gympie Regional Council Area and the Sunshine Coast Regional Council area.

"Young people can be referred to the program through police, schools, health and child safety services and participation is voluntary."

The closing date for applications from organisations is 5pm on Friday, June 21.

Service providers interested in applying for funding to deliver the program can obtain more details at justice.qld.gov.au/youth-justice/youth-boot-camps-general-information.

An information session for service providers considering submitting an expression of interest will be held in Hervey Bay on Tuesday, May 28.
