Boy prisoner causes chaos after climbing on to jail roof

MALMSBURY Youth Justice Centre staff have spent hours trying to bring two inmates under control after a boy climbed onto a roof.

Witnesses reported a shirtless boy climbed onto the roof about 4pm on Monday and remained there well after 5.30pm as some workers began to go home.

It is understood another boy in a different unit smashed a steel window to make an escape but was eventually talked down, adding up to two code greens - or suspected escapes - in one day.

A Department of Justice and Regulation spokeswoman said all issues had been resolved at the centre without the need to call Victoria Police or other authorities.

"Staff safely resolved an incident tonight at the Malmsbury Youth Justice Precinct," she said.

"There were no injuries to staff or young people.

"Dangerous behaviour in youth justice centres will not be tolerated and is referred to police for investigation."
