A YOUNG Hervey Bay man has moved to America to pursue his dreams, but now needs life-saving surgery which may cost up to $100,000 in a country where his Medicare card is invalid.

Tyler Rostedt, 25, has spent his life working towards performing on Broadway, and was accepted into the prestigious Brigham Young University in Ohio at the end of 2014.

But in the past month, Tyler's health started to go downhill. His mother, Yarrilee State School music teacher Leanne Rostedt, said Tyler, nicknamed TJ, told her about his fatigue a month ago.

"He complained to his ballet teacher about neck pain and was told to go to a physio," Leanne said.

After a series of scans, a tumour growing at the base of his neck was found two weeks ago, and he was told to see a brain specialist immediately.

The neurologist told the family via conference call the young performer needed surgery as soon as possible.

"The doctor said he's got a tumour in the worst place of the brain, and he's got a bit of numbness which he didn't tell me about," she said.

"We asked what would happen if we did nothing and he said in two months he would be dead because it's on the part of the brain that controls heart rate and breathing.

"He would go to sleep and not wake up."

The surgery has been booked in for December 10, but the cost including recovery time in hospital could be between $60,000 and $100,000.

"Best case scenario he'll be in ICU for two days and stay in hospital for a week, and worst case scenario - we don't want to think about it right now."

After hearing the news, the Rostedt family immediately thought of ways to raise the needed funds, and with the help of friends Paula Hall and Suz Yandle, a fundraising concert has been organised for December 5.

Rock It 4 TJ will be held at Yarrilee State School from 2 to 4pm, with all funds raised going towards Tyler's surgery and recovery.

Organiser Paula Hall was reduced to tears as she told the Chronicle how much the Rostedts meant to the whole community.

"[Leanne] doesn't stop helping people including my son and we just want to do all that we can to help her in this time," Paula said.

"Everyone has been so generous."
