Break-in at Australia Post

UPDATE: HERVEY Bay's busiest post office was closed to customers for several hours after a break-in early yesterday.

The male thief used a concrete block to smash a front window of the Australia Post at Central Plaza, between midnight and 12.30am.

He climbed into the store and stole electronic equipment and mobile phones.

Glass littered the floor of the store, as the thief had not only smashed a window, but a number of glass cabinets inside.

Crime scene police photographed the damaged property and dusted for fingerprints yesterday.

A police spokesman said CCTV footage had been retrieved and a suspect identified.

Detectives were hoping to make an arrest quickly, possibly as early as yesterday afternoon.

After being turned away from the store, frustrated customers had to use other post offices in town until the police had finished their investigation.

But the business had reopened and was back to trading by the afternoon.
