Miner, 55, dies on the job at Mackay region coal mine

UPDATE Wednesday 7.30am: A 55-year-old contractor at Glencore's Newlands coal operation near Glenden, Queensland, was fatally injured while conducting maintenance work at the site's coal handling and preparation plan, a Glencore spokeswoman said.

Operations at the preparation plant and open cut mine remain suspended while an official investigation by police, emergency services and the Mines Inspectorate continues.

Our primary concern remains the safety, care and welfare of the man's family and our Newlands workforce, she said.

We again extend our sincere condolences to the family.

All possible support is being provided for the family, as well as counselling for those people working at the mine.

UPDATE: The Department of Natural Resources and Mines has confirmed it is investigating a fatal incident at the Newlands coal mine on Tuesday morning.

A spokesman said Queensland Government Mines Inspectors are on site and will conduct an investigation to determine the cause of the incident before providing a report to the coroner.

All mining operations at the site have ceased until further notice.

The mine is 140km north-west of Mackay and 40km north of Glenden.

EARLIER: A miner has died at a mine at Glencore's Newlands open cut coal mine this morning.

A Glencore spokeswoman confirmed that at 10am a 55-year-old male contractor was involved in a fatal incident at the mine near Glenden.

"We are co-operating with the relevant Queensland authorities and have commenced an investigation into the fatal event," she said.

"Production has also been suspended.

"Our deepest sympathies go out to the contractor's family, and we will be providing all possible support services and counselling."

CFMEU Mackay district president Steve Smyth said the issue was "terrible" and his thoughts went out to the friends and family of the man.

Police, the mines inspectorate, government inspectors, Workplace Health and Safety and the CFMEU check inspectors are believed to be on the scene now.

More to come.
