Bridge project gaining momentum ahead of Federal Election
THE plan for a bridge to run across the Burrum River to link Bundaberg with Hervey Bay is gaining momentum.
Hinkler bridge steering committee secretary Doug Waters has been pushing for the bridge for several years.
He's gained hundreds of signatures for the plan and said it mades sense.
"With the bridge you'd cut an hour off the time it takes to go between Bundy and Hervey Bay," he said.
"It takes so long to go around the river when it's such a short straight line distance."
Outgoing Member for Hinkler Paul Neville has previously supported the proposed bridge.
LNP candidate for Hinkler Keith Pitt said he would like to see the project happen.
"If I win the seat, it's definitely something I'd be open to," he said.
Mr Waters said the bridge would permit traffic between Hervey Bay and Bundaberg to avoid the stretch of the Bruce Hwy between Maryborough and Childers.
"It is one of the worst black spots in Queensland at the moment," he said.
ALP candidate for Hinkler Leanne Donaldson has been contacted for comment.
