Brock's back in the good life after long, hard climb

GYMPIE-based canine aristocrat, Brock the malemute, has seen the best and worst of times in his short but adventurous life, but has now reclaimed his rightful place in society.

His proud owner Rachael Sorrell said a change of ownership as a pup gave him a crash course at the school of hard knocks.

But his multiple victories at the Royal Queensland Show have brought him right back where he belongs.

"When he was a baby of eight weeks, he got sold to a family who neglected him, allowed their other dogs to attack him and ultimately abandoned him," she said.

A check of his microchip at the pound turned up the identity of his breeders who took him back.

"So he's already a rescue dog," she said.

"He was eighteen months old when they got him back."

And, a few years later, he became Ms Sorrell's "best mate" and alpha male at her Wolfwhistle Kennels breeding business in Rocks Rd.

"When you're breeding dogs, you look for dogs you like," she said.

That was only a matter of weeks ago and already he has made his mark at the Ekka, taking out three major awards.

Now four years old he was named Challenge Dog, an award given to each of the best male and best female entrants, Best of Breed and Best of Group in Group 6, reserved for working dogs that have no particular working role in Australia.

A sled dog by breeding, he can pull nearly 20 times his weight or 790kg.

Dog breeding is a family affair for Ms Sorrell.

"My mum used to breed in South Australia," she said.
