Five people including a two-month old child were critically injured and have been airlifted to both Bundaberg and Brisbane hospitals for treatment.

The incident occured on the Isis River bridge, approximately 20 km south of Childers, at 10am.

Police said the highway will remain closed into the afternoon as they complete investigations into the cause of the crash.

Motorists are being advised to by-pass the area and instead travel via Biggenden.
