Budget boost for Water Police

THREE regional Queensland towns will welcome new police catamarans to their waters.

The Queensland Government allocated $2.5 million in the 2012-2013 state budget to replace three Water Police catamarans at Townsville, Cairns and the Whitsundays.

The tasks for police on catamarans include issuing marine safety infringements, search and rescue co-ordination, random breath testing and enforcing fishing regulations.

This year's budget allocation will go towards the total $13.7 million cost of purchasing the three 18-metre catamarans in the 2013-2014 financial year.
