Builders begin on Meals on Wheels' $1.9m kitchen in Pialba

IT ONCE appeared a pipedream, but the Meals on Wheels $1.9million Islander Rd kitchen is now in its construction phase.

Meals on Wheels Fraser Community president Ray Fleming said tool-belts were fixed to the hips of Metcalf Constructions' staff after it was awarded the job, and those workers were now on site.

"It's great to see a local building firm be awarded the contract," Mr Fleming said.

"In addition, a large percentage of the sub-contracting work will be carried out by local tradespeople.

"Maryborough's Keystone Architects have been involved with this project since the conceptual stage and are the project managers."

Mr Fleming said expectations were construction would be wound up by November's end with the organisation trading, at least in part, from Islander Rd by Christmas.

He said the new kitchen and building, necessary because the service outgrew its current facility, proved dreams could come true.

The project was made possible with the help of the state's Department of Communities, Fraser Coast community groups, service clubs and organisations, and the Community Help Group.
