Bulk of poll respondents report rate rises of more than 5%

RATES rose by more than 5% for the majority of people who responded to our online survey on rate hikes.

More than 150 people voted in the poll with 83% saying their rates increased by more than 5%.

The breakdown showed 39% reported their rates rose between 5% and 10%, a further 37% said their rates jumped by 10-20%, while 7% had their bills soar more than 20%.

Some 7% either had a lower rates bill than last year or an increase of less than 5%.

The poll followed complaints by ratepayers that their bills were more than the 5% Mayor Gerard O'Connell suggested most residents would pay if they took advantage of discounts.
