Bulls are just as important as the riders: PBR

IN ANY team sport, all players are equally important.

Pro Bull Riders Australia says this is the case for the bulls ridden in their shows, including the event coming to Hervey Bay on April 30.

PBR general manager Glen Young said the corporation modified its chutes and rings to make them extra-safe for the bulls and their riders.

"It's the little things like no protruding objects to bump and or scratch, sheeted areas where bulls may be inclined to want to kick, the way the facilities are set up so bulls move freely and have space," MrYoung said.

Event organiser Diane Hallam said every bull involved in the Hervey Bay event came from an accredited contractor.

"We comply with all of Australia's animal welfare standards, and so do the contractors," Ms Hallam said. "It is paramount to the shows."

Mr Young said PBR did regular check-ups on the bulls all year round.

"You can see the exceptional condition on the bulls and how they are handled at the events," he said.

"Vets inspect pre-, during and post-event at all PBR competitions."

"It is about nurturing them; understanding each individual bull, how they perform on certain feeds, their traits, watching who they gel with so they can be penned, paddocked and transported with friends."

The PBR Live Series will be on at Hervey Bay's Seafront Oval from 5pm next Saturday.

PBR bull injuries

Bulls that suffer a career-ending injury are retired to stud.

Six bulls have been euthanized as a result of injuries since 1996.
