Hot cross buns hopping off the shelves in lead up to Easter
MACKAY supermarkets started stocking their shelves with hot cross buns this week and it seems we can't stay away from them.
Millions are being devoured nationwide.
The Easter favourite goes on sale at the same time each year at Woolworths supermarkets, a Woolworths spokeswoman said.
"They are extremely popular, our customers love them, and they are one of our highest selling bakery items in the lead-up to Easter," she said.
"Woolworths sells approximately 54million individual hot cross buns in the months leading up to Easter (nationally). Of that we expect to sell over 7.2million individual buns in the first week."
Meanwhile, a Coles spokesman said customer feedback had told them people wanted hot cross buns on shelves as soon as possible.
"Last January alone we sold more than 5million buns (nationally) and between now and Easter - which is only 12 weeks away - we expect to sell more than 30million (nationally).
"With buns that taste as good as ours we understand why customers want them now, but for those who prefer to wait, our bakers will be preparing buns every day until Easter."
Hattie's IGA owner Jill Grant said they had not started stocking their shelves with the buns yet.
"We're planning on putting our hot cross buns on the shelf early in February," Ms Grant said.
"I don't think there's a right or wrong time personally... as for the store, it's up to customer demand."
