BUREAU: Prepare to duck for cover this Christmas

THE Bureau of Meteorology is encouraging people on the Fraser Coast to prepare for rain on Christmas day.

Over the next three days, showers are predicted for the region with slightly more heavy rain expected to come this way on Friday.

A spokesman from the BoM said the region could get up to 20mm on Christmas day.

"If you are planning things over the Christmas break, we are encouraging people to look upwards," the spokesman said.

"Have a look and see what's coming, and if you can put a tent or roof on outside activities or move indoors if possible."

On Christmas Eve and Boxing Day, light showers bringing 0 - 2mm of rain are predicted.

The spokesman said the expected rain was not linked to the monsoon trough in Northern Queensland.

"It's two separate weather events," he said.

"The tropical low in the Northern Territory expected to pop up in the Carpentaria and there's still a chance it will develop into a cyclone over the weekend, but the weather here is not related."
