Burrum man lucky to have a home after national park fire

A FIRE that destroyed more than 1000ha of the Burrum Heads National Park could have been contained earlier, a local man says.

Doug Waters lives in the national park and has campaigned tirelessly to have the fire breaks maintained.

However it wasn't until Friday morning when he described the situation as a "panic" that machinery was bought in to clear vegetation.

He said Rural Fire Crews weren't able to access the blaze to attempt to contain it.

He said he was lucky to still have a house after the raging blaze burnt fences on his property boundary.
