Buyers shunning Ford Falcon as Commodore regains ground

THE Ford Falcon may die before the Blue Oval pulls stumps on local manufacturing in 2016.

Latest VFACTS sales figures show the Falcon sales continue to spiral, with only 573 sold in August. That's 21 fewer than last month which had been the Falcon's worst performance in history.

Holden meanwhile is enjoying a Commodore resurgence. It's not the heady days of old, but on the back of the new VF platform Holden sold more than 2800 Commodores last month.

Holden took 66.7% of the large car market, while Ford dropped to 13.6%.

Ford said the poor results were expected following the government's fringe benefits tax change announcement. Sales of the Falcon plummeted following the FBT announcement.

The Territory SUV has also taken a sales hit. Only 834 Territorys were sold in August, which is nearly half the figure achieved about two months ago.

Holden moved back into the number two overall position behind Toyota, with the new Holden Malibu scoring more than 240 sales in the mid-size segment. Mazda maintained its strong sales position, dropping back to third overall but is still nearly 3000 units ahead of where it was at the same time last year.

Overall, the August 2013 market of 93,336 new vehicle sales is a decrease of 216 vehicle sales or  -0.2% on August 2012 (93,552 vehicle sales). August 2013 (26.5) had an equal amount selling days as August 2012, resulting in a decrease of eight vehicle sales per day.

The industry is on track for 1.135 million sales this year.
