Greens: Asylum seekers missing out on basic health care
ASYLUM seekers are missing out on basic health care, the Australian Greens say.
The claim follows the death of a young man in a Western Australia detention centre last week.
Greens immigration spokeswoman Senator Sarah Hanson-Young called for a full investigation into the death, which she said could show detainees were not receiving appropriate medical attention.
"The circumstances surrounding this man's death and the medical care he received before passing warrants a full investigation," Ms Hanson-Young said.
"We are hearing more and more cases of asylum seekers who are not receiving access to even the most basic level of health care."
A Department of Immigration and Protection spokesperson on Saturday said an investigation was under way. The spokesperson said there appeared to be no suspicious circumstances surrounding the death.
