Byron Bay surfs into second after Yamba qualifier
BYRON BAY finished second in the Australian Boardriders Battle qualifying round at Yamba on Saturday.
Former World Championship Tour surfer Danny Wills proved the difference with Cabarita and Byron qualifying for the national final at Cronulla, in Sydney, early next year.
Lennox-Ballina finished third after having won the qualifying round at Yamba last time.
Zac Wightman surfed well for Le-Ba with Luke Stickley producing some solid scores for host club Yamba.
Cabarita surfer Chippa Wilson helped his team secure the win while Le-Ba finished third.
"It's been a while since I put a jersey on but I'm stoked that I did it," Wilson said.
"The feeling of surfing for your club is unreal and if I was surfing for myself then I probably wouldn't have done the event.
"Cabarita is such a tight-knit club and to see everyone surf as well as they did puts a massive smile on all our faces.
"We thought of ourselves as the underdogs a little bit, so to get on top and take the win feels awesome."
The Australian Boardriders Battle is the country's biggest grassroots boardriding event with $110,000 prizemoney.
It involves more than 60 of Australia's best boardriding clubs in eight State qualifying rounds culminating in a two-day national final for 20 clubs on the Australia Day long weekend.
