"Ice Cream Fairy" wins 10 medals for Main Street Cafe
PRUE GRAY is known as the Ice Cream Fairy.
It's a fitting title for the woman whose homemade sweet treats won 10 medals for Ballina's Main Street Cafe at the recent Royal Queensland Food and Wine Show.
"We've only been making the ice cream since September last year, and this was the first time we'd entered a competition," she said.
"We thought we'd give it a go."
Ms Gray is a pastry chef by trade, but she has been enjoying her new role as the Ice Cream Fairy at the cafe on the corner of Moon and River Sts.
"At the food and wine show we got a gold medal for the milk chocolate ice cream," she said.
"We also got six silver medals and three bronze.
"We're stoked - we make everything here on site so it's great to know we're doing something right."
Their gold medal in the chocolate category was a victory over ice cream heavyweights such as Sara Lee and Bulla Dairy Foods.
One of the silver medals was for the ginger gelato, and the pumpkin pie ice cream also picked up silver.
"The feedback from customers has also been great," Ms Gray said.
"They love our ice cream. Chocolate, strawberry and vanilla are our most popular flavours, but people also love Ferrero Rocher and pistachio.
"My favourites are egg nog and pumpkin pie.
"It's weird because until now, I've never really been a big ice cream fan."
Main Street Cafe owner Larry Endres said his favourite flavour was also pumpkin pie.
"Prue does such a great job," he said.
"We call her the Ice Cream Fairy because when we all get to the cafe in the morning, the ice cream section is just looking fantastic."
