Centro taking stock of K-mart
MAYBE not this festive season but Fraser Coast gift buyers could be shopping at K-mart in Hervey Bay in the build up to Christmas 2010.
The Fraser Coast Regional Council has given the go-ahead to an application by Centro developers Leda to bring forward the potential opening of the renovated shopping complex at Pialba.
Mid-November 2010 is now a real date in the diary for the developers after councillors voted unanimously to bring the opening date forward from January 2011.
“My view was that if they can get their doors open in late December 2010, they should be getting a medal not a hindrance,” councillor Gerard O’Connell said.
“Why should we be arguing about five or six weeks if they can be open and trading and providing a retail service at the peak end of the year. I still think there’s a retail seepage from this area to Bundaberg, Sunshine Plaza and Brisbane. We have to arrest that and keep it in the region.”
Some Centro businesses were represented at the planning and development meeting.
“Any further delay on any further extension will cost businesses financially,” Danie van der Westhuizen of GameTraders told the meeting.
He said he and his wife had opened the business there five years ago on the basis that certain developments would go ahead.
“I speak for lots of businesses that don’t make great profits.
“It looks to me that some relatively small things that can be done are not being done like the link to Main Street.”
Another prominent franchise holder said his business had been devalued by $100,000 over four years as foot traffic fell off.
The council’s original economic analysis set the opening date for the new complex in 2012, with a view to likely effects on other retail centres. This was later brought forward to January 2011 and now to mid-November 2010.
