Challenge brings back memories

THE coming Hervey Bay Billycart challenge this weekend has brought back memories for one Hervey Bay family of the old billycart challenges that were popular on the Fraser Coast more than 50 years ago.

Hervey Bay resident Mrs Potter unearthed this photo of her then 10-year-old son Robert Potter after he won the Soapbox challenge in 1958.

Mrs Potter said her son didn't spend a thing on the cart after he found the wood, wheels and fruit box he used to build it.

Mr Potter and his brothers raced for several years before the event was cancelled.

The old event will come alive again this weekend when the Hervey Bay Lions Club hosts a new inaugural billycart challenge in Urangan tomorrow.

Families, schools and businesses have been invited to enter a team in the challenge to be held at the mobility corridor between Ann St and Elizabeth St.

The challenge will kick off at 8.30am and teams have been invited to sign up on the day.
