Cheryl bucks the trend and earns the top prize

A SUGGESTION from her daughter to try a different style of art with "freer movement" and slightly more abstract was right on the money for Fraser Coast artist Cheryl Greer.

She claimed first prize at the 30th annual Hervey Bay Competitive Art Exhibition with her work Power and Grace.

Ms Greer said, in the past, she had created lifelike depictions of horses, so the artwork was something new for her.

"I'm pretty chuffed and extremely surprised," she said.

Competition judge Chris Postle said the painting spoke to him.

"It jumped off the wall and technically was very well executed," he said.

Mr Postle said the task of judging the competition was difficult.

"A good piece of work is a personal response to a place in space and time and all the winners shared the need to make art from real-life experiences," he said.

About 120 people enjoyed Friday night's official opening function and on Saturday morning about 40 people converged on the gallery to hear Mr Postle explain how and why he chose the winning works.

The exhibition will be on display until September 15 at Hervey Bay Regional Gallery, 166 Old Maryborough Rd, Pialba.

Entry is free and all of the artworks are for sale.

Visitors can purchase a hand-painted souvenir catalogue for $4 and buy a $2 ticket in the raffle to win a painting by Rolf Sieber, Shady Swamp.

The gallery is open from 10am to 4pm each day.
