Children may have started fire which closed Torquay Tce

TORQUAY Tce was closed to traffic as firefighters worked to contain a blaze which burned through several acres of land on Tuesday.

A police officer raised the alarm after seeing the flames creep up a hill near Ann St about 2pm.

Properties were protected but the road was blocked for more than an hour.

Early investigations suggest the fire may have been started by children as the remnants of a camp fire was found nearby.

With weather conditions worsening and school holidays approaching, Acting Hervey Bay Station officer Mark McGrath urged parents to be more vigilant.

"We are asking the public to keep an eye on their children," Mr McGrath said.

"Until we get some significant rain, we are facing real fire danger and incidents like these impact our ability to respond to emergencies."
