Chinese sister-city guests take away great memories

THE Fraser Coast has hosted six Chinese delegates on their two-day visit to the region as part of a sister-city relationship that started in 1997.

The delegation from Leshan, China was headed by the Vice Mayor of the city, Yuan Xiaosong.

Fraser Coast Mayor Gerard O'Connell said they loved our region.

"They were absolutely besotted by our beautiful region," he said.

"He enjoyed the beaches and the moonlit night and he was most pleased with the little things we take for granted."

Yesterday the delegation toured the Discovery sphere and took a walk on The Esplanade and the Urangan pier.

Cr O'Connell said he would follow up with the Chinese about the cultural exchange.

"Really important were the links we were able to make with education," he said.

"We've got a number of training providers that will now forge some pretty strong partnerships for student and teacher exchange, so we'll see a real influx in our education centres."

The Chinese Garden in Hervey Bay was built as part of a cultural exchange between the two cities.

While on the visit, the delegation unveiled the final layout of the Australian Garden in Leshan.

The last Fraser Coast delegation to visit Leshan was in May 2010 and explored economic development, business, tourism and educational opportunities.
