Classic film East of Eden to be shown at local libraries

A GOLDEN oldie is shown each month at the Hervey Bay and Maryborough Libraries.

This month a very special film is being shown - the film that was James Dean's debut, East of Eden.

The 1955 film was directed by the highly influential Elia Kazan and was loosely based on the novel by John Steinbeck. Along with James Dean, the film stars Julie Harris and Raymond Massey.

Of the three films in which James Dean played the male lead, this is the only one to have been released during his lifetime and the only one Dean personally viewed in its entirety.

Councillor for Community, Heritage and Family Services George Seymour said the classic film screenings had proven to be extremely popular.

"The screenings are a great way to experience classic cinema. These are films that are rarely shown.

"We have a wide range of regular activities at the libraries, from chess clubs to children's literacy programs," Cr Seymour said.

"There is something for everyone."
