Stuart Taylor in the box seat against three challengers

UPDATE 9AM: Stuart Taylor is likely to be re-elected to his division nine seat, holding a comfortable margin over his challengers.

With 39% of the vote, Cr Taylor sits ahead of Jan Carlson and Chris Couper on 21% each and Jeanette Maynes on 17%.

Acknowledging he was not a certainty to win, Cr Taylor said he would wait and see the results of the special votes.

"My gut feeling is that the pre-polling will be a little bit different; like two elections," he said.

"It's a matter of waiting and seeing.

"I'm happy I've got a 2% increase on what I got in 2012."

After his failed run for mayor in the 2012 election Chris Couper was hoping for a different result in division nine.

But in his second stand in local politics Mr Couper attracted 21% of the vote.

Teaming up with mayoral candidate Jannean Dean, Jeanette Maynes promised more community consultation if elected.

Despite not receiving the vote she had hoped for, Ms Maynes thanked the volunteers who assisted her campaign.

"I have been so humbled by the kindness, support, generosity of all the volunteers, supporters, friends and voters," she wrote.

"When you do your best there are no regrets."
