Cobalt make pitch to be premiers

IT MAY have been the first round of a new year but there was nothing new about the performance of Incas Cobalt.

They started 2010 just at they had finished last year – winning yet another game in the Maryborough Softball Association senior women’s competition.

The competition leaders won their ninth game out of the 10 they have played so far this season after beating Incas Silver 6-4 at Fairfield Park.

No home runs were hit in the showdown but there wasn’t a lack of catches taken.

Ashleigh James, Adam Theuerkauf and Kaye Hoyes all gloved a catch each for Incas Cobalt.

Leeanne Murtagh (two), Kim Daley, Wendy Mathiesen and Tayla Barron all took catches for Incas Silver.

Mathiesen, whose daughter Rebecca is a five-time Queensland representative pitcher who was also a member of the Australian under 19 squad, said the game had gone down to the wire.

“We were leading 4-2 at one stage but then we dropped a couple of catches in the outfield,” Mathiesen said.

“That was a shame but that’s softball – you win some, you lose some.”

In the other game of the round, Aztecs Arrows hammered three home runs but it wasn’t enough to beat last year’s losing grand finalists, Aztecs Apaches.

Aztecs Apaches won 13-10 thanks to a home run from Michelle Schultz and a catch by Alana Aspinall.

Zachary Thatcher, Shaun Mitchell and Shannon Russell hit the home runs for Aztecs Arrows while Mitchell also took a catch.

If you are wondering why boys such as Thatcher and Mitchell are playing in the women’s competition, well, there is an explanation.

Boy’s aged 15 and under are allowed to play as there is no other competition for them to play in Maryborough.

Once they turn 16 they have to play a men’s competition, something Maryborough officials have plans to get up and running in the future.
