Confident Cods set for tough clash with Saints

RUGBY: The prospect of gaining a top-four spot has Cods skipper Roger Geldard champing at the bit.

But standing in his side's way is the dangerous and unpredictable USQ.

The Cods, who sit fifth on the Risdon Cup ladder, will take on the fourth-placed Saints in Toowoomba on Saturday.

"USQ are a funny team to play - they're never quite out of the game," Geldard said.

"It's going to be another good contest."

USQ captain James Gough said Condamine deserved the favourites tag for Saturday's clash.

"We are under no illusions that they'll be aiming to dominate in the forwards and finish in the backs," he said.

"Matching their physicality and structure will be our focus... we'll be looking to put in an 80-minute performance to hopefully use as a good base heading into finals."

The Cods' morale is high after a hard-earned draw against the ladder-leading Emus in Goondiwindi at the weekend.

The Condamine side went into the clash as underdogs but emerged with two competition points - a rare feat for visiting teams in Goondiwindi.

"It was a terrific team effort," Geldard said.

"The real contest was in the forwards and we managed to capitalise on the loose ball."

Player of the match went to hooker Will Radburn while flyhalf Jamie Loska also put in a good showing.

Geldard said his side's combinations had been working well lately.

"Our new centre pairing is looking good and we hope this carries on as we move forward," he said.

The Cods' B grade side had a rare loss lastn Saturday, going down 17-10.
