Convicted drug trafficker seeks court audio recordings

A FORMER Sunshine Coast and Gympie man convicted of trafficking meth wants access to a recorded conversation between him and his lawyer because he wants "the truth to come out".

Craig Cant was last year sentenced to a total eight years jail after pleading guilty to trafficking meth, supplying meth and producing marijuana.

His sentence was later reopened after the Queensland Court of Appeal found that six months Cant had spent behind bars before his sentence should have been considered and declared as time served. This decision reduced his jail sentence by about six months.

Cant's case is back before the court of appeal and on Friday he represented himself, appearing at court via a video link-up from jail.

He said he wanted the court to have access to a recorded conversation that took place between him and his lawyer in a court room.

Court was adjourned at the time but audio is often continuously recorded in court rooms.

But Michael Cowen QC, representing the Director of Public Prosecutions, said recordings of conversations in a court room could not be legally accessed if court was not sitting at the time.

He also tendered explanatory notes from when this legislation was introduced, which stated access to out-of-session court recordings was not necessary because evidence could be obtained by other ways.

Cant said he wanted the court to have a copy of the transcript "so that they can make an informed decision (about) what the conversation was about. We've got two different stories".

He said a crime had been committed but did not provide more details in court.

"I just want the truth to come out, Your Honour."

Justice Hugh Fraser said it would be a matter for the court to decide when the matter was heard again next week.
