Restaurant asks customers to skip phones with meals

A COOLUM bar and restaurant is offering free drinks to lunch or dinner customers who turn off their mobile phones for the entirety of their meal.

David Hadid, the owner of My Place, came up with the idea because he was sick of seeing customers on their phones instead of talking to each other.

"I'm tired of mobiles. It's not social," Mr Hadid said.

"You come to a restaurant to talk to your family and friends and get engaged but people are always floating away on their mobile phones and looking at their social network all the time."

Mr Hadid said it was particularly disappointing to see parents bring children into the restaurant and set them up on screens while they had their meals.

"They are not getting the real experience of going out and having a meal," he said.

"We want people talking and enjoying themselves. It's good for the energy of the place."

A ban on laptops has already been in place at the restaurant for some time.

"We don't want the place looking like an office," he said.

"I try and tell them why we do it. We're here to offer a social experience on top of a good meal and a good view."

The offer of a free beer or wine for customers who turn off their phones will begin at the bar and restaurant tonight but Mr Hadid said he had already had good feedback.

"A lot of people are coming up to me, even on the beach when I went for a walk this morning, a couple of people said, 'This is amazing, what you're doing'."
