Council grants of up to $350 available for sports stars

GRANTS of up to $350 are available under the Fraser Coast Regional Council's financial Assistance to Sportspersons Grant Scheme 2012-13.

Applications are now being taken for the second round of funding.

Sport, recreation, events and open spaces portfolio councillor Darren Everard said the council was always proud to support the region's budding sport stars.

"But sport can become quite expensive at higher representative levels and these grants will help to ease some of the financial burden," he said.

The funds are provided retrospectively, meaning only applicants who competed in national or international competitions between July and December in 2012 are eligible to apply.

Applicants must also meet the following requirements:

  • a Fraser Coast resident
  • represent Queensland or Australia in an officially recognised national or international sporting event
  • hold amateur status

Cr Everard said participants competing in a national or international event within Queensland are eligible for a grant of $150.

"If they're participating in a national or international event interstate, they're eligible for $250 and up to $350 if they're required to travel overseas," he said.

"The grants are operated on a first-in, first-served basis so now is the time to apply."

Applicants who have received other council funding towards their sporting event are ineligible to apply.

"To help spread the funds as fairly and evenly as possible, potential applicants are only eligible to apply every two financial years," Cr Everard added.

"That means that successful applicants who received funding through the Financial Assistance to Sportspersons Grants 2011-12 are not eligible to apply until next financial year."

Applications close on June 30.
