Council to lobby for northern flights after survey
CAIRNS would be the most popular destination for Fraser Coast residents if the council was able to convince airlines such as Qantas Link or Virgin to start operating northen flights out of Hervey Bay airport.
More than 900 people submitted responses to the council's Northern Flights Survey.
Mayor Gerard O'Connell said the far north proved the most popular destination.
"Just over 37% of respondents said they would like to be able to fly to and from Cairns from Hervey Bay," he said.
Cr O'Connell said the council would now begin the process of lobbying the airlines for extra flights, based on the results of this survey.
He said other results in the survey would also be raised with the airlines, particularly the possibilty of flights to resource sector hubs such as Rockhampton or Mackay.
"Of those that fly for work purposes, around 32.8% are employed in the mining and resources industry."
Cr O'Connell said the present situation where anyone wanting to fly north from the Fraser Coast for either business or tourism purposes having to first go south was a real inconvenience that needed to be dealt with.
"The flight could be a direct route or part of a multi-destination route linking the Fraser Coast to other regional tourism areas," he said.
"Northern flights would definitely add potential to the region.
