Council to spend about $2.4m a year on footpaths, bikeways

FRASER Coast Regional Council plans to spend about $2.4 million a year for the next 20 years building foothpaths and cycleways.

On Wednesday, the council adopted its 20-year strategy to guide the construction of footpaths and bikeways across the Fraser Coast.

Sport, recreation, open space and events portfolio councillor Darren Everard said the Fraser Coast Walk Cycle Strategy listed the projects in order of priority across the region which allowed the council to plan for their development and funding.

"In the current budget, council has allocated $1.27 million for footpath and bikeway improvements," he said.

"If we add up all of the projects, council is looking to invest $47.7 million into the network over the next 20 years, which is about $2.4 million a year.

"Many of the projects, such as the 34km-long, $12million path to link Maryborough and Hervey Bay along the former rail corridor will depend on State and Federal Government grant funding."

Copies of the strategy can be viewed and downloaded from the recreation page of the council's website http://www.frasercoast.qld.gov.au/recreation from Thursday, March 5.
