Crowd-funding campaign for teens killed in horror crash

TENTERFIELD is in mourning after two of the town's popular teenage mates were killed in a fatal crash on the New England Highway near the Queensland border.

Zak Sweetman, 18, and Luke Smith, 16, were passengers in a dual cab ute that veered off the highway and rolled about 11.30pm on Saturday night, killing the teens and leaving the driver and another teenage mate in shock.

The four friends, all from Tenterfield, were travelling through Glen Aplin towards Stanthorpe when the crash occurred.

Both Zak and Luke, who were members of the Tenterfield Motocross Group, died at the scene.

The men regularly enjoyed their passion for motocross and four-wheel driving together.

News travelled quickly of the incident, leaving friends and family in the tight-knit community reeling.

"It's a tragedy that is beyond understanding, but the reality is we have families that are now impacted, tragically, in a way no family should be," Inspector Brian Cannon said.

"We have no suggestion another vehicle was involved."

Just hours after the crash, Zak's uncle Andrew Taylor launched a a crowd-funding campaign to help support their families through this tough time.

"Not only my nephew, but also a great mate to a lot of people and family around the place," he posted.

"That cheeky grin that everyone loved will always remain in our minds forever."

Since the page was launched by Mr Taylor on Sunday, 85 people had donated more than $4,900 of the $8000 target.
