Crowd of about 1000 floods indoor skate park on opening day

WITH about 1000 people turning up for the opening of Hervey Bay's new indoor skate park, owner Mandy Maurer has described the launch as an "overwhelming success".

Ms Maurer said scores of skaters and riders lined up outside Rock Off Indoor Park at Pialba even before the doors were opened at 9am on Saturday.

"People started queuing at 8.30am and by 9am the line was out to the gate," she said.

"I would say we had about 1000 through the centre on Saturday, including spectators and parents.

"It was an overwhelming success."

High-flying freestyle BMX rider Jack Fahey thrilled the crowds with demonstrations throughout the day.

The former Bundaberg boy arrived at the park on Friday night and even used the location to film a YouTube video.

Ms Maurer said there were a few minor spills throughout the weekend, but no serious injuries.

"There were a few little scuffs but nobody had to go to the hospital or anything," she said.

Ms Maurer said the facility, on the corner of Boat Harbour Dr and Main St, was a hit with skateboarders, BMX bandits and scooter riders of all ages.

Even middle-aged men have been hitting the ramps.

Ms Maurer said some punters had been riding from 9am to 9pm on Saturday, despite the summer heat.

The park is equipped with a number of ceiling and wall fans, and Ms Maurer hopes to have more installed in the near future.

"We're doing all we can to keep it as cool as we can, but at the end of the day, it's a tin shed," she said.

"Any indoor facility faces the same issues."

The park will be open from 9am to 9pm seven days a week on the school holidays.

Under 18s will need to get their parents to sign a waiver before they can ride.
