Sankey sisters to strike at titles

DANIELLE Sankey knows she will be in good hands when she makes her debut at state level tomorrow.

That's because the Hervey Bay gymnast will have her older brother Matthew as her coach.

A member of the Wide Bay Gymnastics Club, Danielle, 10, will team with fellow Level 3 gymnasts Mia McWilliam, Ella McConville, Aylee Barker and Maddison Beel as they go for gold at the Queensland club gymnastics championships in Caloundra.

Danielle said she wouldn't want anyone else in her corner than Matthew.

"It's good to have him as coach. He helps with many different things and does things a bit different to other coaches," she said.

Danielle's brother reached Level 7 as a gymnast before trying his hand at coaching.

While his competition days are over, the 17-year-old said mentoring aspiring young gymnasts like Danielle was just as rewarding.

"Coaching you get to see the kids grow up and watch how they develop," he said.

"There's no better feeling than seeing what you've taught them and the sense of achievement from them learning."

The club championships will be a special occasion for Danielle, who is following in the footsteps of not only her brother, but also her 12-year-old sister, Lauren.

Danielle said she was well-equipped to deal with the pressure that comes with being in the thick of a state tournament.

"It can be daunting but I've been to these venues that they (Matthew and Lauren) have been at; so that's one advantage I've got," she said.

"I've been there and done it before.

"I'm confident I'll achieve what I expect I can get and hopefully I can get good scores for my team."

Danielle won't be the only Sankey who will be playing a big part in Wide Bay's push for a medal at the club championships with Lauren in the club's combined Level 5 and 6 team.
