Man wrongly jailed for 19 years faces retrial

DAVID Eastman, who spent 19 years in prison before his conviction for murder was quashed by the ACT Supreme Court, lost his bid yesterday to avoid a retrial.

He was convicted in 1995 over the shooting death of Australian Federal Police Assistant Commissioner Colin Winchester in 1989, but released in 2014 after the Supreme Court found the forensic analysis used to link him to the Canberra crime scene was flawed.

Justice David Ashley did not make public his reasons for dismissing the 70-year-old's application, to ensure that information did not compromise the retrial.
