Davidson's up to speed

YOUNG speed demon Wyatt Davidson can solve difficult maths equations in a flash, but this weekend he will have just one number on his mind when he competes at the National Dirt Track Championships in Mt Isa.

The Hervey Bay kart driver will be shooting for first at the circuit where he started his career.

"I'm excited about going back there for the first time since we left Mt Isa," he said.

"I've come a long way since I started.

"And to go back there as a junior now, I know I'm going to throw everything I've got at it and go hard."

Last month, Davidson, 13, joined fellow Hervey Bay State High students Dylan Beethan and Ben Accut and finished third at a Central Queensland maths competition.

Whether it is crunching numbers or burning rubber on the track, Davidson said the thrill of winning was the ultimate.

"I do it because I enjoy it and because of the speeds I get to do.

"It's a lot of fun and the best feeling when you win," he said.

Davidson said he became hooked on karting at an early age and started racing in Mt Isa when he was seven.

After moving to Hervey Bay, he joined Bundaberg Kart Club and confirmed his emerging star status by taking out the rookies class club champion award last year.

The junior B-grade driver will race against a hot field of karters at the three-day national championships which start today.

It will be Davidson's first shot at the showcase dirt track event.

More experienced on bitumen circuits, Davidson, who will have his father Andrew working as his pit crew, was still confident he would be up to the task.

"It's a lot different but not a major worry," he said.

"I'm sure I'll be able to adjust quickly.

"I'll have to drive smart and hopefully the kart performs well."
