GOLF: Unless his mother's health changes for the worst Jason Day is on track for this week's US Masters at Augusta.

Day withdrew from the World Golf Championships Match Play in late March, revealing his mother Dening had been diagnosed with lung cancer.

Dening initially was diagnosed with terminal cancer in Australia before getting a better prognosis from US doctors.

She had surgery on March 24 and is now resting at his home in Columbus, Ohio, where his wife, Ellie, and children Dash, four, and Lucy, one, are with Dening.

Day admitted the emotional stress had affected his on-course results in 2017, with Day's best finish a tie for fifth at Pebble Beach.

"I didn't even want to be on the golf course," he said. "It was a struggle for me to play golf.

"For the first time in about a month-and-a-half, I'm happy to be on the golf course.

"The biggest thing is that I was in a bad situation with my mum, but I'm here now at Augusta and that's what I've got to be thankful for.

"I'm enjoying myself again and I'm thankful to compete at the Masters, which I absolutely love.

"It's been really, really hard to enjoy myself. I think things are starting to brighten up."

The 29-year-old Day, who claimed his first major title at the 2015 US PGA Championship, has often expressed a lifelong dream to win a Masters green jacket and he has come close with two top-three finishes and another top 10.

In February, Day surrendered his 47-week reign as world No.1 to American Dustin Johnson, whose three wins this year include back-to-back WGC events in Mexico and the Match Play event in Austin.

But Day's hopes of adding a second major to his 10 US PGA Tour victories are boosted by the fact he's enjoying the sport again.
