Defence Expo pulls out the big guns for military families

THE daunting task of moving home is a constant in the life of Defence member Shaun Ganguly and his wife Lauren.

Recently moved from Canberra for Mr Ganguly's new posting at the Borneo Barracks in Cabarlah, and with a newborn, the couple was thankful for the services provided by the Defence Community Organisation.

"A new home means having to go and meet people again and find new support networks," Mrs Ganguly said.

Area manager Roslyn Munro said the role of the Defence Community Organisation was to provide a family support service for military members.

"The families experience a change every two or three years. It's our role to support the families and help them to re-establish social networks," Ms Munro said.

"We help them tap into existing resources and show them what services are available.

"It's also a chance to educate people about the military lifestyle and it's not just about the kids seeing what their parents do.

"This time many of the members brought their parents and it was great to see how proud they were."

The welcome information expo organised by the DCO provided a one-stop-shop for this information, and an opportunity for Defence members like WO2 David Smith to show his family around the Swartz barracks at Oakey.

Mr Smith's 10-year-old son Kynan had been awaiting the day with much excitement and was rapt to be given the grand tour by his dad and other Defence staff.

"I liked looking at all the machines and watching how they do everything," he said.

"I had a go at the obstacle course and beat my dad."

Ms Munro said at a first count about 1000 people attended the expo and were given the opportunity to network with at least 30 service providers.
