Delays continue through road works
MAJOR delays of almost an hour on the Hervey Bay-Maryborough Road this week caused headaches for motorists and smaller delays will continue until early next year.
A Main Roads spokeswoman said a complaint, received by the Chronicle, of a 55-minute delay this week was due to a three-day maintenance project at Susan River, not the ongoing roadworks near the Torbanlea turn-off.
She said minimal delays near the turn-off would continue until the completion of the $17.1 million upgrade project early next year.
Workers tried to keep delays to a minimum and outside peak-hour traffic times, the spokeswoman said.
She thanked motorists for their ongoing patience and co-operation around roadworks sites.
The upgrade project includes widening a 3.6km section of road between Torbanlea-Pialba Road and Dundowran Road and four-laning a 1.5km stretch from the existing Booral Road intersection to north of Dundowran Road.
“The new approaches to the future roundabout connecting Booral Road and Torbanlea-Pialba Road to the Maryborough-Hervey Bay Road are almost complete,” she said.
“Motorists would have seen the layout of the new roundabout taking shape and from next week there will be a slight detour around the site to allow for the construction of the roundabout.
“Construction of a heavy vehicle turnaround area has been completed on Old Walligan Road providing heavy vehicle operators, such as school bus drivers, with an area to safely manoeuvre their vehicles.
“Motorists are still able to use the intersection at Old Walligan Road and the Maryborough–Hervey Bay Road, but over the next few months this will be replaced with a new and safer T-intersection at Torbanlea-Pialba Road.
“Works to widen the Maryborough-Hervey Bay Road between the existing Booral Road intersection to north of Dundowran Road will also continue over the next few months.
“About 45 new culverts are now in place to improve drainage at the location.
“As part of the project, Transport and Main Roads is also realigning the existing Torbanlea-Pialba Road and Booral Road intersection with a new roundabout on Maryborough-Hervey Bay Road.”
