Denyer races to the altar

TELEVISION personality and race car driver Grant Denyer went somewhat ‘postal’ on national television at Cape Byron yesterday morning.

He marked his return to the Sunrise program by setting out for Australia’s most westerly point, Denham in Western Australia, on a humble postie bike from Australia’s most easterly point.

Denyer, who blames himself for the idea, is set to marry his fiancée and Sunrise producer Cheryl Rogers in four weeks and plans to complete the trip in three-and-a-half.

“The timing’s not very appropriate. It’s my own self-inflicted fault. I never said I was the most intelligent guy,” he quipped.

While this might freak out most brides-to-be, Denyer has got around that by taking his fiancée with him.

“She’s very efficient. The wedding is 90 per cent organised, and in between patches of mobile reception she’ll be ordering the hors d’oeuvres and flowers,” he said.

Denyer was still vague about the total distance he had to travel in the next 24 days as he motored off down Lighthouse Road.

“I’m not that big on detail, the kilometres were a bit of an afterthought,” he said.

“I’ve flown it before and it doesn’t look that far.”

Denyer, who will have to negotiate six of the world’s driest deserts in the peak of summer, has just recovered from a broken vertebra following a monster truck accident in 2008.

While he left Sunrise in 2006 to pursue a surprisingly successful stint in V8 Supercars, and as host of Australia’s Got Talent, the 32-year-old said he also needed to spend more time with his family – but they were over him now.

“It’s great to be back,” he said.
