Dodgy bitumen layers hit coast

DODGY tradesmen are leaving Hervey Bay householders in a sticky situation with offers of cheap bitumen.

“The usual ploy for itinerant bitumen layers is they offer you a cheap driveway using bitumen leftover from another job but you need to take up the offer immediately,” Office of Fair Trading executive director Brian Bauer said.

“Generally what happens is that people don't get what they pay for, or the traders do a poor job and then leave.

“Consumers don't have any way of contacting these itinerant traders so they wind up having to pay a reputable tradesperson to come and fix the job.”

Mr Bauer said alarm bells should start ringing that these traders were con men when they asked for an upfront payment.
