Dog ‘hit in head with sledgehammer’

POLICE have charged a man after he allegedly hit a dog with a sledgehammer at a Goondi Bend property, south of Cairns.

Police allege the dog made its way into the backyard of home on Oak St about 10am on Monday, where it attacked another dog that lived at the address.

A man who owned the dog that was under attack allegedly then used a sledgehammer to strike the other animal in the head.

The dog suffered serious injuries and was taken to a veterinary clinic for urgent medical care after it was found by animal control officers.

Police have since charged a 25-year-old Goondi Beach man with serious animal cruelty.

He is expected to appear in the Innisfail Magistrates Court on November 27.
