Taken drugs: judge asks defendant

AN ALDERSHOT resident appeared to be so out of it when he fronted court yesterday that the magistrate was left questioning his sobriety.

“Have you taken drugs or alcohol this morning?” Magistrate John Smith asked Luke Nathan Lannan as he approached the bar table.

“You just don't seem right.”

Lannan, whose speech was slurred, replied that he had consumed prescription medication.

At one point during his guilty plea to a charge of breaching bail he appeared to doze off.

The court heard Lannan, unemployed, failed to appear in the Pine Rivers Magistrates Court on Monday. He was yesterday unable to provide an excuse.

Mr Smith fined Lannan $250 and adjourned a charge of unlawful use of a car until next month.
