Driver's lucky escape as hammer smashes windscreen

A WOMAN and her partner are lucky to be alive after a hammer flew into the windscreen while she was driving at 100kmh.

Georgia Hrabe and Dennis Kilmister were travelling towards Burrum Heads on Friday afternoon when the hammer slid off the back of a flatbed truck.

It smashed into the windscreen of Ms Hrabe's Renault Koleos in line with her eyes.

Ms Hrabe was showered in glass from the shattered windscreen and narrowly avoided being seriously injured when the hammer was stopped by the car's sun visor.

She was shaken but said: "I'd like to return the hammer".

Mr Kilmister acknowledged they were lucky to be alive.
